Presidents Report for AGM June 2012

President’s Report for AGM June 2012.

The last 12 months have been rather interesting. We have though, unfortunately experienced some broken windows and graffiti splashed on the clubrooms and as a consequence have boarded ourselves in! kids and vandalism, we think. Dave has installed a security light which may help as a deterrent.

The club membership has been relatively static, but with two or three new and re-enlisting members in Steve Manley Tony Bond and second generation, Carl Silk. It is great to have them back, although Tony is a resident of Napier, so rarely gets to catch up in person. Steve Manly has been to some meetings and also catches up at various outings.

Carl is good for some newer ideas and some stirring to balance things out. We catch up with Steve Waghorn at the beach hop and Kumeu. Robin has been and is at the moment over in the States doing his thing and Andrew has moved to New Plymouth for a couple of years to manage a contract for his employer. We look forward to their return and input to the club. We have had interest from a couple of others and we hope that they will be able to join up soon. We wish all our members good luck in their endeavours.

Our club meetings have had regular attendance even though there has been different members on any given meeting night,

Our thanks to Brent, and his chosen team, especially Megan, for their magnificent effort and dedication, in arranging an end of year function in our club rooms. A catered meal and some great camaraderie with a Christmas theme was had by all. It is efforts like this that set the standard for future events.

Brent and Megan also arranged and delivered some black button up shirts, more dressy than the usual tee shirt.

Our thanks to Simon. He typically put in another great effort with the garage run. Visits to some of our interesting garages, made for a most pleasant and cruisy afternoon, with a pit stop and coffee at Brent’s, then finishing at Barry’s with a bbq sausage sizzle for good measure.

The raffle ticket experience has successfully continued thru the year and I have enjoyed doing the deed and thank all members for their support and for helping willingly when required. We have 11 prepaid ticket holders which generally makes for a quick sale. Approximately $200.00 is returned to the club per month, and of course some great chin wagging is achieved alongside some prospects for future membership.

We never had a prize giving this year. It seems to slip into the too hard basket. If anyone feels they would like to put it together I am sure a team would be ready to help. The trophies are all, bar one or two, at my place, and are useful for impressing my random visitors. Being a small club with only a handful of cars on the road, seems to create a few quandaries, in who deserves what trophy, as a prospective recipient has possibly already had the trophy in a previous year. Once again the situation can be easily revived.

Our club helped with the sale of the raffle tickets for NZHRA successfully selling 150 tickets and earning some free ones and $150 for our club funds.

The club also sponsored Barry and myself to attend the 50th anniversary of NZHRA, a formal sort of occasion at TePapa. A most enjoyable evening, and our thanks to the club for the privilege.

New cars on the scene? Well at risk of missing someone, I would mention Rammie’s big haul from the states, a 32 tudor, awesome. Ford of course! Let the Nomad go. Kerry & Mellonie have had the 33 trimmed.

Clive has gotten on with his 38 revival. Steve Manley has the 40 pickup, and Milton has the coup well underway. I can’t think of any others, but I’m thinking there will be someone or two missed, coincidentally these cars are Fords. Interestingly tho we have our fair mix of different makes and models of cars. Most members have been actively working and modifying and just enjoying new purchases.

For my part, my Fairlane has had a rebuild of the rear end suspension set up and wheels that have been modified to suit. Axles ex Robin from the U.S.

So far as my tenure as club president goes, I have really enjoyed the honour and status, perhaps with a bit of guilt at not being able to get to everything going. I, like the rest of us in this close knit club, love the hot rodding scene, and especially the times when we are all together at any rodding or social event.

Thanks to our secretary Rob, our treasurer Mylton and Lance for managing a tight and clean fridge!
Ramie as delegate. Thanks to Dave for his enthusiasm and support and advice when needed.

That’s it from me. I’m looking forward to another year with Gold Coast Rod and Custom club, a most excellent bunch of blokes! And cars.

Martin Phillips.

Juniors Kustoms Rides Visit

We had nothing much to do Sunday so we went out to visit a friend of mine Ray Watkins.  He asked Mark at Juniors to open up so we could see the progress on his 57 Chev. It arrived in the country before christmas and went straight to Juniors.

Juniors have named the project El Buscado. 1957 Chev 210 Pillarless. It will have a custom chassis, LS3 and 6 speed auto.

Rammie checking out a cool 34 coupe.
Marty's car is finished for now and is looking extremely cool. He just needs a bit of space in his garage and it'll coming home.

Mark's personal project. He's a bit worried about getting certification, you can't see much out of that front window.

 Holden-powered Volvo, incredible workmanship.

Jimmy Keeys Merc looking real sharp.

A Few Crazy Top Fuel Facts

A FEW CRAZY TOP FUEL FACTS;

  • A top fuel car will accelerate from standstill to 160kph on 0.8secs (8 seconds faster than the Porsche 911 Turbo) and has travelled only 20 metres from the start line.
  • Within 200m of leaving the start line the car is travelling 450kph.
  • In under 4secs the car travels 305 metres and crosses the finish line at 530kph!!!
  • Off the start line, the driver is subjected to over 6g of acceleration.....and is still accelerating at nearly 4g across the finish line (A space shuttle launch generates around 3g). This instantly becomes negative 6g of deceleration the instant the parachutes are deployed.
  • Modern day top fuel engines produce upward of 8500 horsepower (6500kw) and 6000ft-lbs (8100Nm) of torque powering a car weighing 1000kg.
  • It takes almost 900 horsepower just to drive the blower at maximum boost pressure.
  • The ignition magnetos provide 88amps to each spark plug - almost enough to power your MIG welder! The plugs are totally consumed during a pass, in fact by half way down the run the plug electrodes are gone and the motor is 'dieseling' from the compression and glow of the hot exhaust valves.
  • The pressure from the upward facing exhausts can produce around 400kg of downforce at full throttle.
  • Off the start line, a pair of top fuel cars can generate 3.5 on the Richter Scale!
  • If you crossed the start line in your Bugatti Veyron at a constant 320kph, a top fuel car from a standing start would still beat you to the finish line!!!

Club Meeting 1 May 2012

It was another good meeting with some vigourous debate, a few beers and lots of laughs.  Thanks to the hardy members that turned up on a cold evening. Kerry offered to donate a heater which will help out over the next few months.

Everybody enjoyed the Garage Run and agreed we need to do it more often.  Thanks Simon for organising that.

Cashflow is a bit tight at the moment as the Rates, Insurance and PO Box bills come in at this time of year. We're making more than enough from the Raffles to cover these but we probably shouldn't have bought the last lot of Bonus Bonds as it left us a bit short.  We won another $40 from the Bonus Bonds by the way.

Also at this time of year we have to let the NZHRA if we want to put forward any remits for Rule changes. And next month will be our AGM so Club Fees will be due. It would be great to have a good turnout.

This weekend is the Napier this sunday. Check out http://events.nzherald.co.nz/2012/marineland-street-rods-hot-rod-festival-swap-meet-2012/napier for map and details.

Please let me know if you're going up and what time you're leaving so I can let everyone else know. Our new Napier member Tony Bond is hoping to catch up with everyone.

A new membership is out and there's been a few changes so make sure you've got a copy of it.

Cheers,

Dave

Garage Run April 22, 2012

Pictures from the Garage Run April 22, 2012.  It was a great day, beautiful weather.  Thanks Megan for the awesome morning tea, thanks Barry, Sharon & Martin for the BBQ and thanks Simon for organising it.

Simon's making steady progress.  The car is looking good and he's hoping it won't be long  before he'll be racing at Masterton. He's all fired up after going to the drags earlier in the month.

The '56 is as reliable as ever. Looks good, sounds good.

Brent and the kids were out in the Bucket. Big logistical nightmare making sure all the kids got a turn.

Carl's home upstairs and business downstairs. The kitchen was way too tidy and we suspect he's still getting his meals at home.

Trick Cortina getting all new running gear and a smallblock Ford engine.  Check out the other smallblock Ford on the engine stand. All the best Carl, you deserve to do well.

Diesel's 300C a bit sad without it's radiator. That's his new Pacer in the background.

Part of Brent's collection. That's his pristine WB Holden Ute under the covers.

A little piece of paradise in Waikanae.

Brent's Monaro is for sale along with a whole heap of spare parts.

The trusty '55 parked outside while Kerry was busy working on Barber Mike's '37 Chev Coupe.

Darryl's new project. He's been making good progress, busy replacing the old rusty panels with  new ones he received with the car. Just needs a Nissan van roof if anybody knows where one is.
